Two men who know Washington well vie for Senate seat
Bowles provides steadying hand, supporters say
Even when he ran President Clinton's White House, Erskine Bowles made it clear that he didn't like Washington.
Bowles, an investment banker from Charlotte, taped a cartoon to the wall of his office that showed a man roasting in the flames of hell. "On the other hand, it's great to be out of Washington," the caption said.
Burr votes the party line, looks out for business
For much of his 10 years in Congress, Rep. Richard Burr has worked to protect tobacco interests and fend off the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
And with passage of the tobacco quota buyout that will send almost $4 billion to North Carolina, he played a pivotal role in legislation that did both.

COMPILED BY DAVID RICE
Democrat Erskine Bowles, Republican Richard Burr and Libertarian Tom Bailey are running for the U.S. Senate seat that is held by John Edwards, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. Earlier this year, Edwards said he was not running for re-election so that he could pursue the presidency. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry named Edwards as his running mate in July.
Bowles is a former chief of staff in President Clinton’s administration, and a former administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Burr has served five terms in the Congress, representing the 5th District in Northwest North Carolina.
Bailey has run for the N.C. House and N.C. Senate.
